Aarhus, Denmark To Host 2018 ISAF Sailing World Championships

The International Sailing Federation is pleased to announce that Aarhus, Denmark has been selected to host the 2018 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

The International Sailing Federation has today announced that Aarhus, Denmark has been selected to host the 2018 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

The Commission made their recommendation to the ISAF Executive Committee who unanimously endorsed the recommendation of Denmark as host of the 2018 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

Jerome Pels, ISAF Chief Executive Officer said in a press release from ISAF: “The bids ISAF received were of exceptional quality and we are grateful for their commitment to the sport. All four venues demonstrated passion and commitment to host the 2018 ISAF Worlds which made ISAF’s decision a difficult one to make. In recent years Aarhus has demonstrated its expertise in hosting high calibre sailing events featuring the finest sailors on the planet. We look forward to working closely with the organizing authority to deliver a world class event for sailors, spectators and those watching from home.”

Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark says: “We are very honored to be awarded the ISAF Worlds 2018. Aarhus is the right place at the right time for sailing. The city and Denmark has a strong sailing and event tradition and we now look forward to making the event a big bang for sailors and sailing.”

Hans Natorp, president of the national sailing association, who is on site in Southhampton, says: “The Bid process has been very intense and I have right through the process had a very good and positive dialogue with ISAF.”

“Aarhus is called the city of smiles and today the city is smiling even more. 2018 ISAF Sailing World Championships will be one of the greatest sporting events in Denmark,” says Jacob Bundsgaard, Mayor of Aarhus and he is being supported by Rabih Azad-Ahmad, Culture & Citizen Service in Aarhus: “It is an acknowledgement of Aarhus as a sporting event city and of the Bay of Aarhus as sailing venue.”

Bid partners, the Danish Sailing Association, Sport Event Denmark, Sport Aarhus Events (City of Aarhus) and Sailing Aarhus bring together proven regatta organization skills in a venue offering world-class racing conditions.

The competition venue will be established at a new Aarhus International Sailing Centre in Aarhus Yachting Harbor.  Easily accessible and within walking distance of downtown Aarhus, the area is a favourite destination for residents and tourists alike who enjoy the restaurants and shops as well as clean bathing waters, fishing and fresh air.

Aarhus has welcomed several world class sailing events in recent years including the 2008 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship, 2010 505 World Championship, 2011 A-Cat World Championship and the 2013 49er and 49erFX European Championships and will also play host of 49er & 49er FX Junior World Championship 2014, 2015 Open 470 European Championships, European Laser Standart and Laser Radial Championships 2015 and has also just been awarded the 2015 Nacra 17 World Championships.

Denmark was up against strong competitors from Busan (Korea), Gdynia (Poland) and The Hague (Netherlands).
